Symptoms and Treatment of Vaginal Infections

Yeast or vaginal infections are common among all age groups of women, from girls to grandmothers.  Not only are yeast infections uncomfortable and sometimes painful, they are embarrassing and make women want to stay locked in their rooms until it goes away.  However, if the symptoms and recognized early enough, the woman with the infection does not need to suffer unnecessarily or for a long time with the infection.

The symptoms of a vaginal infection are easy to recognize once you know what they are.  The first big sign of a vaginal infection is any change in urine color.  For example, if your normal urine ranges from clear, when you are very hydrated, to a bright or dark yellow, when you are very dehydrated, you can be certain that something is wrong if your urine is gray, green, or an unusual yellow color.  Should there be any abnormal discharge that may be gray, green, or yellow; you would need to contact your doctor immediately, as this is a sign of an infection that could cause problems for you later on in life.  If the vaginal area is red or has a rash like look to it that is another symptom.

Swelling of the vaginal area is another sign that something is wrong.  Itching accompanied by pain, or pain by itself is a sign of an infection.  If there is an odor coming from the genital area that is another symptom.  Should you feel a burning sensation when you are urinating, that is another sign of an infection, and this is a dangerous one because it could lead to a urinary tract infection, if it already had not turned into that.  If you notice that you are bleeding or have pain while you are making love that is another sign of the infection.

Treatments for vaginal infections vary because of the severity of the infection and the age of the patient.  For example, if a woman in her early 20’s, we will call her Eve, had an infection, she may not take the same medication or over the counter treatment as a woman in her 70’s, we will call her Ann.  First, their medical histories would be drastically different.  Eve will have not had as many, if any, heart and blood circulation problems as Ann.  Eve will not have had as many children as Ann.  The amount of sexual partners may be different, depending on each woman’s life, but Eve will have had more opportunities to have “safe” sex, with a condom, where as Ann would not have had that form of birth control when she was younger.

This is important because of the HPV virus that can cause cancers and infections in young women without them being aware that they have that virus.  Because of Ann’s age, she would have more medications that may react with over the counter pills or creams.  This many not have been the first vaginal infection for Eve, but it may have been Ann’s first infection, as odd as that may be.  These women’s doctors will need to know all of this information and much more to know how to treat their infections without it coming back or causing them any more health problems.
